5 Tips for Choosing Colors for Interior Renovation

Interior Design and Architecture

Looking to renovate your home and searching for the perfect colors? Here are 5 tips for choosing colors for interior renovation.

Colors have the immense power to interact directly with our emotions. It is scientifically proven that colors can alter human moods, aiding rest and concentration, or providing energy and stimulus for action. Each color is connected to specific atmospheres, emotions, objects, and memories. This is why, when deciding to renovate your home, choosing colors for interior renovation is an activity that must be carried out with great care. Here are 5 tips for choosing colors for interior renovation.

1. Follow your taste and instinct, but not only

When choosing a color, instinct and heart play a fundamental role. Few things are as personal and indisputable as the love for a color. Personal taste is personal taste, and as the Romans said, de gustibus non est disputandum. However, color combinations are governed by very specific criteria. If these criteria are not respected, the choice of interior colors in a home can be very disappointing. Creating environments that are too colorful and full of contrasts could generate strong disharmony. At the same time, choosing monotonous and overly neutral colors doesn’t help enhance a space. Therefore, it’s necessary to find the right balance. If you have any doubts, contact an Interior Design expert immediately. Their advice will be invaluable in finding the ideal formula and the right combinations that match your taste and personality.

2. Choose a different color for each room

Since we associate a mood with each color, it’s important that each room in the house has its own associated color. There are many studies on this subject, some ancient, just think of the oriental philosophy of Feng Shui. According to this concept, warm colors are ideal for painting domestic environments dedicated to socializing, such as the kitchen and living room. Colors like red, orange, and yellow, in their various shades, transmit warmth and the desire to be together. Moreover, these colors also increase appetite and are ideal in settings where food is consumed. Conversely, cool tones instill a natural sense of rest and relaxation. Green, light blue, and purple, in their different shades, are perfect colors for bedrooms, bathrooms, or a study and library.

3. Enhance the strengths of each room

Colors can help us enhance a room’s strengths, while partially minimizing its flaws. Evaluate the natural brightness of a space. If a room has little light, paint it with light colors, this will immediately give it instant brightness. The same applies to small rooms. Light colors slightly expand our perception of space, making a room appear more spacious than it actually is. Also consider that north-facing rooms receive less light than south-facing ones, and generally their light is cooler. To make them more welcoming, you can favor warm colors, perhaps focusing on the warmer shades of white.

4. Apply the “60-30-10 Rule”

The “60-30-10 Rule” indicates a specific color arrangement that is particularly harmonious and natural to the human eye. To follow this arrangement, you need to choose three different colors to combine in the following proportions:

  • 60% of the elements in a room should be in the chosen dominant color. This will be the wall color;
  • 30% of the elements in the same environment will be in a secondary color. This can be a color chosen for contrast, or as a tone-on-tone color combination;
  • the remaining 10% of elements will be in a third color, which will only be used for certain room accessories. For example, this could be the color of curtains, part of the furniture, or upholstery.

5. Always do a test!

Before painting a room, always do some testing. Try downloading interior painting simulation apps. These augmented reality applications will allow you to preview how a room would look with walls in different colors, simply using a smartphone. Once you’ve chosen your preferred colors, don’t immediately paint all the walls, make a comparison. Apply the paints on a limited part of the wall, then let them dry completely. Once the paints have actually dried, you can objectively evaluate which one you prefer, then proceed with painting the rest of the room.
