Can you access the Furniture Bonus without renovation? Which furniture and appliances are included in this incentive?

What is the Furniture Bonus? How can you access it? Can you access the Furniture Bonus without carrying out renovations? How is this bonus linked to renovation works? What types of furniture and appliances can be purchased and claimed for tax deduction? Let’s explore this topic in detail together in this article.

The Furniture Bonus: how it Works

The Furniture Bonus is a tax incentive that allows you to deduct 50% of expenses from IRPEF for furniture and appliance purchases, with a maximum spending limit of €8,000. The Furniture Bonus will be valid for 2023 and throughout 2024. All IRPEF taxpayers, whether resident or non-resident in Italy, can benefit from this incentive. This deduction is directly linked to home renovation works. You cannot access the Furniture Bonus without carrying out building renovation works on a property.

What Works are Required to Access the Furniture Bonus?

To access the Furniture Bonus, specific types of interventions must be carried out on individual residential units or common areas of residential buildings:

  1. Building renovation works: modifying balconies, attics, facades, or creating new windows;
  2. Extraordinary maintenance works: construction of bathrooms, gates and fences, internal staircases, replacement of external fixtures, installation of elevators or safety stairs, and boiler replacement. This also includes works that improve the building’s energy efficiency, for example, through the use of renewable energy sources;
  3. Restoration works: operations aimed at enhancing the historical or artistic aspects of a building;
  4. Ordinary maintenance works on common areas: this type of intervention includes wall painting, replacement of flooring or fixtures, repair of roofs, gates, and gutters.

Can You Access the Furniture Bonus when Furnishing a Different Room from the one Renovated?

You can access the Furniture Bonus even without executing massive renovation works. Furthermore, the interventions carried out don’t need to directly involve the room being furnished. For example, you could renovate the bathroom and still claim the Furniture Bonus for a sofa purchased for the living room. In summary, to access the Furniture Bonus, renovation work is required, but the purchased items can be used to furnish any room in the property, considered as a whole.
