Sliding Doors: Advantages and Disadvantages

Interior Design and Architecture

There are different types of sliding doors, both concealed and not. These are a very functional solution, increasingly appreciated. Let’s explore their advantages and disadvantages together.

There are different types of sliding doors, suitable for various needs. This solution has become particularly popular recently for several reasons. Sliding doors are ideal for smaller rooms: they avoid clutter, leaving space for furniture and passage. However, they are not limited to this. They are also a modern, minimalist solution, a true element of design. They are perfect for enhancing large open spaces, or for highlighting outdoor areas such as views and gardens. If you are considering renovating your home and are thinking about which doors to choose, let’s explore the advantages and disadvantages offered by sliding doors together.

Sliding Doors

More and more people are choosing sliding doors for their homes. After all, they represent one of the best solutions for optimizing domestic spaces. Their use is based on a very simple system: the door is on a track and slides on two small carriages equipped with wheels. This sliding system can be installed either outside a wall or inside. Let’s look at the differences between these two different types of sliding doors:

  • Sliding door outside the wall
The door outside the wall is always visible, whether open or closed. This type of sliding door can be installed in the home very simply and quickly, as it does not require masonry work. It is an economical and very functional solution.
However, the wall on which this type of door is installed must always be left free, to allow the panel to slide freely sideways.
In any case, a sliding door outside the wall can be transformed into a true design element that decorates and enhances the environment.
  • Sliding door inside the wall, concealed
A sliding door inside the wall is the best solution for optimizing space in the home. It is called a “concealed door” precisely because, when open, it can be completely hidden from view. The advantages it offers over traditional hinged doors are numerous. There is more space for furniture, more freedom of movement, and no door that “slams.”

However, this type of solution requires significant masonry work and cost. To install a concealed door, it is necessary to insert a counterframe into the wall. To do this, you must first ensure that there are no pipes, cables, or other important elements inside the wall. If the wall is clear, it will be demolished where the sliding system is to be installed.

Sliding Doors, Advantages and Disadvantages:

In summary, let’s take a closer look at the overall advantages and disadvantages of sliding doors.

Advantages:

1. Space gain
As we have seen, the strength of sliding doors lies precisely in the significant space gain. By eliminating the obstruction of a hinged door opening, we can add more furniture to the room and manage spaces more freely.

2. A design solution that adapts to any context
A sliding door is a very modern and design-oriented solution, suitable for various contexts. It is perfect for a home in a minimalist, industrial style, and not only. It is ideal for a home in an ethnic style, especially if you make Interior Designchoices inspired by minimalist oriental aesthetics. It can also be a very sophisticated solution for those who choose contemporary classic style.

3. Automation
Another advantage of sliding doors is automation. With the development of home automation and increasingly “smart” homes, sliding doors offer us the opportunity to install motors for automatic door opening and closing, even remotely. This is an important aspect to consider, given the rapid technological evolution of recent years.

Disadvantages:

1. Higher costs
The most obvious disadvantage of a sliding door is the cost, especially if you choose a concealed door. Particularly significant are the installation costs of the door and the masonry work expenses.

2. Less insulation compared to traditional hinged doors
Concealed doors require leaving a small gap between the door and the floor, larger than traditional hinged doors. The door will therefore be less insulating, both in terms of climate control and acoustic insulation. It is important to carefully evaluate the need for insulation in a room before choosing a sliding door.

3. Limitations for the wall
As already mentioned, when installing a sliding door outside the wall, part of the wall will need to be left free to allow the panel to slide. The problem is overcome by installing a concealed sliding door. However, it is important to keep in mind that, if a concealed door is installed, the wall can no longer be drilled to install wall-mounted furnishings. Furniture and appliances can be comfortably placed against the wall, but not fixed.

A middle ground? Folding doors!

Folding doors represent a compromise between hinged doors and sliding doors. They are most suitable for rooms where space is very limited, so restricted that they do not allow for the installation of either an external or concealed sliding door. The folding door, composed of two or more panels, folds onto itself, minimizing obstruction when opened. It is a very functional middle ground.
